A Conversation with Attorney Fred Gray in Honor of MLK Day 2025

Attorney Fred Gray, who filed historic cases in the Middle District of Alabama, recently joined the court and the Johnson Institute to discuss his career and relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The program was a joint effort between the ALMD and the Institute in honor of this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr, Day.

Dr. Robert White of Alabama State University interviewed Mr. Gray in a “fireside chat” in the Historic Courtroom of the Frank Johnson Courthouse, the setting of many of his cases, including Browder v. Gayle and Williams v. Wallace.

Prior to the fireside chat, the choir from Booker T. Washington High School performed musical selections chosen for the program from the balcony of the courtroom, and theater artists from Alabama State University returned by popular demand for a repeat performance of Faces of a King: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The court also recognized Jia Lim of Baldwin Arts and Academic Magnet School for winning the t-shirt design competition in honor of the day.
