On July 8, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first publicly read to the citizens of the American colonies. Fast-forward 250 years later, this same document was read simultaneously across all 50 states, 5 territories, the District of Columbia, and the minor outlying islands of the United States in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. It was truly a momentous occasion in our nation’s history!

To mark the milestone, the Frank M. Johnson Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse served as a host location to commemorate the 250th anniversary of that first public reading.
